Matthew Magee is the author of Peruvian Shamanism: The Pachakuti Mesa (2002) and his spiritual work has been covered by organizations such as National Geographic and National Public Radio (NPR). Despite having several college degrees, Matthew believes his true education was derived from his childhood initiation into the spirit world, subsequent 11 years of shamanic apprenticeship, and the 2 years he spent living with the Mi'kmaq peoples on the Elsipogtog Indian reservation in New Brunswick, Canada. The
Awakened Ceremonialist: Date:
July 26 - 27, 2008 Time: Saturday 10am - 9:30pm & Sunday 9am - 5pm Tuition Lake Waukomis
Community Center
Through the course of our weekend together we will learn to construct this visionary map through the expression of a Pachakuti Mesa, which is an altar-like arrangement of sacred items used in ritual and ceremony for healing and to awaken dormant human potentials. As we unravel the Mesa's complex layers of symbolism, and demystify its cryptic dialectic expression, we will reveal key landmarks that clearly illuminate both the journey beyond the realm of the familiar and the return home. This is a process that holds equally powerful insights for both the first-time apprentice and the advanced practitioner as well. Participants of all skill levels will come away from this experience with a deeper understanding of the tradition, its healing artistry, and how to apply its wisdom to their everyday lives.
Note: Each weekend within this four-part series will build upon other sessions to deepen one's experience through the progression of workshops. Simultaneously each workshop will also stand alone as a complete activation, healing and teaching. As such, attendance at prior workshops will not be a prerequisite for participation in other events within this four-part series. |

Weekend Two -
January 31-February 1, 2009 In the most basic sense, divination exists to make clear the often elusive and intangible world of Spirit. It brings form to the formless, and structure and order to apparent chaos and disorder. It does so by constructing a mutual language base between the diviner and the Spirit world. And, it is through the integrity of this dialogue that order, guidance, or healing can be realized and made manifest. This intensive workshop will provide its participants with the necessary skills and tools to initiate this dialogue with Spirit through several different modalities, including: coca leaf divination, charcoal/smoke divination, and shell divination. Universal guidelines and general information will be provided to help demystify many systems of divination on a cross-cultural level. In other words, one will begin to recognize the commonalities of most divinatory forms. In addition, we will focus on putting this information into practice. Participants will see, first hand, how the language of Spirit comes alive through the divinatory process and how the clarity and information gained can be utilized in client diagnosis, decision-making, and the process of self-discovery. This workshop will also incorporate the following teachings to assist the developmental process of transition from apprentice to adept: Advanced Mesa Set-up. This section of the workshop will provide examples of optimal placement of artes, khuyas, sepjas, etc. for the Hanan section of the Mesa. We will also learn an advanced Link-up process and how to implement shamanic journeying and guided meditations into your healing practice, and begin learning the basics of how to create and conduct your own ceremonies as Spirit guides you to do so. Topics such as the Three Fields of the Mesa, the Ceque System, Apachetas, and the Pachamama Renewal Process will also be covered. In addition to your Mesa (a stone, shell, feather, white candle, personally
meaningful sacred object and cloth large enough to place these items
upon), please bring twelve additional stones (each large enough to hold
comfortably in one hand), some bay or laurel leaves, a giveaway medicine
piece, and a rattle. |

Weekend Three - July 18-19, 2009 This section of the workshop series will focus on the following topics: The Hurin (Lower) section of the Mesa as well as the Apollo (Support) Altars, which house the various Aguas (Waters), Perfumes, and Incenses. We will also learn to work with Varas (Staffs), Extraction Khuyas (Stones), Swords, and Feathers. Participants will be exposed to time honored healing techniques such as the removal of Hucha (Accumulated Density), Limpias (Ritual Cleansings), Suspendidas (Raisings), and Florecimientos (Flowerings) including the medicinal use of Singha (a tobacco mixture). |

| Weekend
Four - January 30-31, 2010 Embodying Prophecy: The Flight of the Condor and Eagle Having journeyed together through the first four workshops we will have learned how the art of curanderismo has interpreted and articulated the great mystery through the ritual expression of the pachakuti mesa and its ceremonial practice. This wisdom will be paralleled by the equally rich indigenous medicine way of the Cherokee Tradition. The combined knowledge and wisdom of both Native North and South America provides a unique outlet to manifest form from the formless and subsequently express aspects of the ineffable in a manner where words alone fall short. The ceremonial expression of both Kamasqa Curanderismo and the Cherokee Teachings weave together the diverse forms of ritual, sensory stimulation, music, history, poetry, and the arts in such a way that awakens the mind and the heart to the sacred dimensions of life. In other words, these traditions empower their users with an extensive spiritual vocabulary for direct and open dialogue with Creator/Creatress, and from this place of understanding, one is no longer reliant upon a physical teacher (in human form) for the teachings themselves. As such, this workshop will be primarily experiential, being conducted with the understanding that observation and direct experience of life are the primary sources of wisdom. We will be moving beyond the need for explanations and into the phase of living the path itself where a shamanic state of consciousness begins governing ones life-paradigm. This is when the fragmented self dissolves. "Doing" becomes "being," and direct communion with the living universe becomes the Way. This workshop is an invitation to share in these once guarded ancestral teachings with the intention of contributing to a global shift in consciousness that promotes healing and balance through a sacred relationship with the Earth. Together, a new way is being created out of the old way, and through it, we have the opportunity to reinvent a harmonious lifestyle with the living universe. Starting first with the self, blossoming next into healthy communities, and finally ushering in a global family unified in its pursuit to live in balance with natural order. Please join us in this endeavor as we work together to create a better world for our children and the next seven generations. The primary focus of this workshop will revolve around a Native North American Sweat Lodge ceremony and an all-night (South American) ceremony.
